The Rotary Club of Northwest Nevada officially became a chartered Rotary International club in November of last year and recently recognized several individuals who helped establish the club and support its mission of "Service Above Self."
Among those honored was Fernley Reporter Editor Robert Perea, who was named an Honorary Member of the Rotary Club of Northwest Nevada in recognition of his ongoing service to the community.
Perea also received the prestigious Paul Harris Fellow recognition, one of Rotary International's highest honors.
The recognition was presented through a contribution made by club founder and chair Suzanne Prouty, who used her accumulated Paul Harris recognition points to honor Perea.
"When you give, you are credited with points," Prouty explained. "One thousand dollars equals 1,000 points. I can then use my points to honor someone else as a Fellow. He does so much for the community."
The Paul Harris Fellow recognition is named for Rotary founder Paul Harris and is awarded to individuals who have made significant contributions to their communities or who are honored through contributions to The Rotary Foundation, which supports humanitarian, educational and peace-building projects around the world.
Rotary clubs bring together business and community leaders to address local needs through volunteer service, scholarships, youth leadership programs and international humanitarian efforts.
The newly chartered Rotary Club of Northwest Nevada plans to focus on service projects benefiting communities throughout the region while joining Rotary's worldwide network of more than 1.4 million members. They meet at 5:30 p.m. on the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month at the Ranch House inside the Silverado casino.
