Fernley took its first visible step toward creating a future Community Garden and Pumpkin Patch on June 12 as city staff, the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office and Waste Management began clearing and preparing the 11-acre parcel proposed for the project.
The partnership brought volunteers, city crews and an inmate work crew together for just over five hours, removing roughly 300 square feet of debris and unwanted materials from the site.
Officials said the work marks the beginning of a longer effort to turn the property into a community space that will support educational programs, recreational activities and family-friendly events.
Waste Management donated a dumpster for the cleanup, allowing crews to remove debris quickly and responsibly.
The city also thanked the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office and the inmate crew for contributing labor to the project. Additional cleanup days are expected as planning continues for the garden and pumpkin patch.
