The Fernley High School marching band continues to work toward its goal of raising enough money to perform in this year’s Independence Day Parade in Washington, D.C.
Band members are selling concessions at Reno 1868 FC home games at Greater Nevada Field, and will be selling concessions at Reno Aces hoe games starting in Apri.

Fernley Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram held a fundraiser March 4, where band members were selling raffle tickets, for a variety of prizes donated by community businesses.
Shellee Kilbride, vice president of the FHS Music Boosters, said the students have worked hard to raise money for the trip, and are appreciative of the support they have received from the community.
Kilbride said the trip will be a memorable experience for the band members.
“It gives them opportunities they don’t get every day, and to be nominated is phenomenal,” she said. “The fact Fernley Didge did this for us is phenomenal too.”
Sophomore Taylor Rusch, a trombone player, said she is excited for the trip, but is most looking forward to the hotel room. She said the parade itself, a little more than a mile long, will be similar to playing in the Nevada Day Parade in Carson City.
“The biggest difference is going to be the humidity,” she said.
Rusch said the band is still deciding what song to play, and she said the band will alternate between playing a song and the drumline playing a riff.
The FHS Music Boosters will be hosting an auction in conjunction with the Spring Band Concert on May 10. The Spring Choir Concert is May 17.
