Fernley athletes shine at Carson Invitational and Sacramento Meet of Champions

A sixth-place finish by Bodie Parsons in the discus at the Sacramento Meet of Champions last Saturday highlighted a strong weekend for the Fernley High School track team.

The Vaqueros posted a series of top-10 finishes at the Carson Varsity Invitational last Saturday, and a handful of qualifiers also turned in strong marks at the Sacramento Meet of Champions. Parsons’ throw of 147-5 in the discus at the Meet of Champions was his second-best of the season.

Joe Perkins finished 23rd in the 800 meters in 2:00.23, and Keeshawn Love was 21st in the 110 hurdles in 16.12 and 19th in the 300 hurdles in 42.50. Kole Miller placed 15th in both the shot put (42-10¼) and discus (129-2). Justice Martell-Artiaga placed 12th in the girls 100 hurdles in 16.11, a season best, and 10th in the 300 hurdles in 47.80, a personal best.

At the Carson Varsity Invitational, Fernley recorded multiple top-10 finishes. For the boys, Noah Thompson placed third in the 800 meters in 2:09.69, a personal best, and Jayden Esparza finished third in the 110 hurdles in 16.31, also a personal best. Andrew Peterson placed third in the 300 hurdles in 44.06, a season best.

The 4x800 relay team of Dominick Dietrich, Peterson, Elijah Perez and Cael Wilson won the event in 8:45.37, while the 4x100 team of Logan Kallas, Bryce Dunagan-Stephens, Esparza and Palen Bates finished fourth in 45.43, and the 4x400 team of Peterson, Perez, Dietrich and Ivan Arias placed fourth in 3:50.95.

In the field events, Levi Lanka finished second in the discus at 151-3, a personal best, and Wyatt McGinnis was third at 143-1, also a personal best. Dunagan-Stephens placed third in the long jump at 20-0, and Esparza was fourth at 19-0½, a personal best.

For the girls, Asia Christopher placed fifth in the 200 meters in 28.81, a personal best, and Nakyla John finished eighth in the 100 meters in 13.55. Blessing Mhondo placed eighth in the 400 in 1:04.48.

In the hurdles, Christopher placed fifth in the 100 hurdles in 17.98, while Reese Johnson finished 10th in 18.62, a personal best. Fernley won the 4x100 relay in 51.89 with Faith Mhondo, Melissa Yokoi, Blessing Mhondo, and John, and the 4x200 relay team of Faith Mhondo, Christopher, Blessing Mhondo, and John finished second in 1:48.70.

In the field events, Angel Pochop placed fourth in the discus at 101-9, and Johnson finished sixth in the pole vault at 9-0, a personal best, and 10th in the triple jump at 31-3½.
