Fernley girls win High Desert Frosh-Soph Invite; boys place fourth

The Fernley High School track and field team girls won the High Desert Frosh-Soph Invitational last Friday at McQueen High School, scoring 129 points to edge Reno, which finished second with 114. The Fernley boys placed fourth with 61 points.

Nakyla John led the girls with a win in the 100 meters in 13.61 seconds and a second-place finish in the 200 in 29.00. Asia Christopher swept the hurdles, winning the 100-meter hurdles in 17.65 and the 300 hurdles in 51.64.

Fernley also won three relay events. The 4x100 team finished first in 59.15, the 4x200 won in 1:51.60 and the 4x800 took first in 11:23.18.

In the field events, Angel Pochop won both the shot put (30-01.50) and discus (89-08). Reese Johnson won the triple jump at 31-02, placed second in the pole vault at 7 feet and finished third in the 300 hurdles in 54.75. Bronwynn Garrett added a third-place finish in the 400 meters in 1:07.00.

For the boys, Logan Allen won the pole vault at 8 feet, while Cole Reynolds took first in the triple jump with a mark of 37-07.00. Jayden Esparza finished second in the 110-meter hurdles in 16.73, and the 4x800 relay team placed third in 10:13.02.

This week the Vaqueros will have their juniors and seniors back in action as well as the team competes in the Fallon Elks Invitational starting at 9 a.m. Saturday.
