The third chapter in the book of the Fernley High School girls basketball season opened this week with a win over Incline on Monday night in the first round of the 3A Northern Region Tournament.
The Vaqueros will write the next pages Friday, when a win would move them into Saturday’s regional title game and to next week’s State Tournament on their home floor.
With a 75-11 quarterfinal win over Incline Monday night, the Vaqueros advanced to face Elko at 3:30 p.m. in the semifinals Friday at Wooster. In the other semifinal, Fallon will play either Spring Creek or South Tahoe, who were scheduled to play Wednesday night after Spring Creek won a play-in game over Lowry on Monday.
The regional championship game will be played Saturday at either noon or 2 p.m.
“I told the girls Chapter 1 was preseason, Chapter 2 was league,” coach Ralph Dunn said. “We did pretty well, and now we start Chapter 3 — regionals.”
The Vaqueros opened Monday’s game with a 24-0 lead, held a 42-7 halftime advantage and were up by as much as 75-7.
The Vaqueros entered the tournament as the No. 1 seed from the East Division, winning a tiebreaker over Fallon. They clinched that spot with a 65-40 win over Dayton Friday night.
The Vaqueros left no room for suspense, leading 20-5 after a quarter and 35-15 at the half.
After giving extended minutes to everyone on the roster against both Dayton and Incline, Dunn expects to tighten the rotation this weekend.
“Going into regionals as the No. 1 team, we will have a target on our back and need to step up each game on both ends of the court,” he said.
