Garrett wins girls region wrestling championship

Fernley's Bronwynn Garrett took first place in the 100-pound division and led the Fernley High School girls wrestling team to a sixth place finish at the NIAA All Girls Northern Region Championships held Jan. 30-31 at Reed. Garrett defeated her first three opponents by technical fall, before beating Viviana Zavala of Spanish Springs 7-1 in the championship match.

In addition, the Vaqueros had four other placers, with Faith Mhondo placing third, Blessing Mhondo fourth, Faith Paulman fifth and Zoe Gillespie sixth in their respective weight classes. The Vaqueros compiled 80.5 team points to place sixth, which was the highest total among 3A schools. Reed won the meet with 199.5 points, Spanish Springs was second with 172 and McQueen was third with 158. In all, 25 teams had at least one wrestler entered and 28 teams scored points.

The boys team competed in the Northern 3A Division Duals last week in Spring Creek, where they went 8-2. As a team, the Vaqueros beat Debbie Smith Academy 71-12; lost to Lowry 46-27, beat Truckee 71-1; beat Elko 39-29; beat Sparks 78-6; beat Spring Creek 42-29; beat Wooster 54-26; beat Dayton 83-0; lost to Fallon 45-35; and beat South Tahoe 54-22.

Individually, Nathan Pritchard in the 144-pound class and Riley McCullar at 175 pounds each went 10-0. Isaid Solis was 9-1 at 150 pounds, Calvin Bacon went 8-2 at 285 pounds Brody Jones (157), Jayse Jones (165) and Isaiah Muttte (190) all went 7-3 while Clayton DeGolyer (113) and Keon Kreller (215) both went 6-4.

This week the boys will compete in the Northern 3A Regional Meet Friday and Saturday at Churchill County High School in Fallon. Opening ceremonies are scheduled for 2:55 p.m. Friday with the first matches at 3 p.m. Wrestling Saturday begins at 9 a.m. The girls do not compete this week, but the state qualifiers from both the boys and girls will compete in the 3A State Championships in Winnemucca on Feb. 13-14.
