Fresh off a seventh-place finish at the Reno Tournament of Champions, Fernley’s Riley McCullar backed up that performance by placing second at the Sierra Nevada Classic Dec. 29–30 at the Reno Events Center.

McCullar swept through the 176-pound bracket into the championship match with wins over Jayden Dira of Reed, David Dhiamparino of Oak Ridge (CA), Isaac Martin of Casa Grande (CA), Grady Cox of Lebanon (OR) and Jonah Bertoli of Cardinal Newman (CA) before losing the championship match to Mason Ontiveros of Turlock (CA) Pitman.

For the girls, Bronwynn Garrett placed fourth.

On Jan. 1–2, the Vaqueros competed in the Joe Rios Invitational in Chico, CA, and had two individual champions and two other placers.

McCullar won the championship at 178 pounds, winning the title with a technical fall in the championship match against Pratham Sharma of Northgate (CA). Nathan Pritchard won the championship at 147 pounds with a 1–0 decision over Tak Hatano of Folsom, CA. Isaid Solis and Jayse Jones each finished in seventh place for the Vaqueros.

As a team, the Vaqueros placed seventh out of 50 teams that scored points.

“All of the boys wrestled really well and are trending in the right direction,” coach Jake McCullar said.

The varsity girls also traveled to the Railroad Classic in Sparks on Jan. 2 and walked away tournament champions.

“Anytime you win a tournament, it’s definitely a group effort,” McCullar said. “I am really proud of our ladies.”
