Revelers streamed through the Main Street Art Park last Saturday afternoon for the second annual Christmas Village Extravaganza hosted by the Fernley Arts & Culture Event Squad.
With Christmas music, hot cocoa and coffee and face painting, visitors were also able to take pictures with Santa and the Grinch, as well as check out the Christmas village display. Fernley ACES president Dana Uhlhorn said there were no new additions to the village this year, mainly because they weren’t sure how much space would be available with the recent improvements being done at the Art Park.
This is the ninth year the Christmas Village has been displayed at the Art Park, and Uhlhorn said the hope has always been to utilize the whole park, which could probably accommodate 40 to 50 houses. He’s hoping to have at least a few more for next year’s 10th anniversary celebration.
“It’s got plenty of room to grow,” he said.
After seeing the Christmas Village in Ogden, UT, which features more than 70 decorated cottages, mini train rides and a variety of activities, Uhlhorn came home with the idea to do something similar here, even if it’s on a smaller scale.
The Christmas Village Extravaganza is one of many free events hosted throughout the year by the Fernley ACES.
“This is why we charge for some of our events, so we can do free events like this throughout the year,” Uhlhorn said.
