The city of Fernley rang in the holiday spirit on Dec. 5, as parade floats, cocoa cups, carols and, of course, Santa and Mrs. Claus filled Main St City Hall with cheer.
Families lined the sidewalks for the annual Chamber of Commerce Parade, which concluded with Santa and Mrs. Claus arriving on the back of a North Lyon Fire ladder truck.

Children clutched cookies and cups of cocoa while being greeted inside City Hall by Lyon County sheriff’s deputies for Cocoa with the Cops, then took their turns telling their Christmas wish to Santa.
Outside City Hall, Biggest Little Radio provided the soundtrack as the crowd counted down the lighting of the city’s new 30-foot Christmas tree.
Lifelong Fernley resident and community leader Wendy Fagundes flipped the switch to light the tree.

The event included a “Stuff the Ambulance” toy drive hosted by Christmas for Kids in partnership with North Lyon Fire, dancers from Fernley Performing Arts, carols led by Stephen Myler and the Fernley High School band and choir and the Dee’s Potato Box food truck.
The cocoa was donated by the Wigwam, and Karen Wagner collaborated with the Fernley Chamber to provide baked and hand-decorated cookies.
Mayor Pro Tem Felicity Zoberski opened the tree lighting ceremony before turning it over to Fagundes for the official lighting. Councilmen Joe Mendoza and Ryan Hanan were also in attendance.
Fagundes was chosen for the honor for her commitment to service through her past role as a Girl Scout group leader and her current volunteer work with Family Promise and Junior Achievement of Northern Nevada.
