With returning starters in 12 of the 14 boys weight classes, including two state champions and three other state qualifiers, and a girls team that continues to grow, the Fernley High School wrestling program is expecting a big season.

The boys team will wrestle this weekend in the Redwood Rumble in Larkspur, CA, while the girls team will be competing in the Folsom High School Girls Invitational in Folsom, CA. The JV team will wrestle at Hug.

“Expectations are through the roof for the wrestling program this year,” coach Jake McCullar said. “The stage is set for something special from these young and amazing men and women this year.”

The boys team returns two-time state champion Nathan Pritchard and defending champion Riley McCullar, along with state qualifiers Brody Jones, Isaiah Mutte and Isaid Solis. Each of them will be captains for this year’s team.

Captains for the girls team this year will be senior April Mendoza and returning state qualifier Bronwynn Garrett.

“Both show the hard work and dedication to lead this team in the right direction,” McCullar said

The Vaqueros have a total of 74 wrestlers out for the team this year, with 53 boys and 21 girls. Josh Paulman will be the head coach for the girls team.

"I am super excited about coming in at the beginning of something that is taking off across the country,” Paulman said. “Wrestling has always been a passion of mine and it's great to see more young women becoming involved.”

Why does the County have to pay the whole bill? Just my opinion.
