Volleyball: Vaqueros to face Dayton for second playoff seed

Volleyball: Vaqueros to face Dayton for second playoff seed

The Fernley High School volleyball team will either be at home next Monday to host a first

round game in the 3A Northern Region Tournament, or on the road in either South Tahoe or

Incline.

Whether the Vaqueros get to play at home or on the road will be determined Thursday, when they

finish the regular season with a match at Dayton. The Vaqueros will be the No. 2 seed with a win

in Dayton, while a Dayton win would tie the two teams for second place and bring in tiebreakers.

The first tiebreaker is the number of wins by each teams defeated opponents. Fernley’s two

losses are both to Fallon, and Dayton has two losses to Fallon and one to Dayton, so they would

have beaten the same opponents if Dayton wins. The next tiebreaker is the number of sets

between the teams. Fernley bet Dayton in three sets in the first match, so Fernley would win that

tiebreaker if it wins at least one set in Dayton.

That would mean the Vaqueros would be the No. 2 seed and play at home on Monday against the

No. 3 seed from the Northern 3A West. That is currently Incline, which hosts South Tahoe in the

final league match on Friday. South Tahoe is currently in second place in the West Division but

the teams would be tied with an Incline win and South Tahoe will win the tiebreaker by winning

one set.

The Vaqueros kept themselves in line for the second seed by beating Elko and Spring Creek last

weekend.

On Friday, they beat Elko 25-14, 19-25, 25-20, 21-25, 15-11. Trista Menesini had 19 kills and

three blocks for the Vaqueros, Lillianna Young had 10 kills, Grace Chapin had four blocks and

Alauna Escartin dished out 29 assists.

Saturday the Vaqueros beat Spring Creek, 25-21, 25-21, 29-27. Menesini had 16 more kills,

Young and Emma Masters each had eight and Escartin had 38 assists.
