Volleyball: Vaqueros fighting for second seed after loss to Fallon

A loss to Fallon last Friday knocked the Fernley High School volleyball team into a battle with

Dayton for the No. 2 playoff seed from the Northern 3A East.

Fallon defeated the Vaqueros in a tense five-set match, leaving Fallon in first place in the league

with a 6-0 league record. Fernley rebounded on Saturday to beat Lowry in four sets and holds a

half-game lead over Dayton for second place entering this week’s matches.

With three matches remaining in the regular season, the Vaqueros would need to win all three

and have Fallon lose three of its final four matches in order to have a chance at the No. 1 seed.

The Vaqueros are 5-2 in league play and will be on the road for their final three matches. They

play at 6 p.m. Friday at Elko and at noon Saturday in Spring Creek, before going to Dayton to

finish the regular season on Oct. 24.

Fallon was scheduled to play at Dayton Tuesday and host Lowry Friday, before finishing the

regular season at home next Friday and Saturday against Spring Creek and Elko. Dayton is 4-2 in

league play and travels to face Spring Creek Friday and Elko Saturday in between its match

Tuesday with Fallon and on Oct. 24 against Fernley,

Fallon rallied to win the final two sets Friday night to pull two games ahead of the Vaqueros in

the standings, winning 12-25, 25-18, 25-27, 25-28, 15-11.

“The match against Fallon, we played really good,” Fernley coach Diane Chapin said. “They’re a

tough team.”

Trista Menesini had 17 kills for Fernley and Grace Chapin added eight, as the Vaqueros had 37

kills for the match. But Fallon had 49 kills, led by Reagan Johnson with 16 and Sutton Yost with

11. Both teams served 11 aces, and Fernley had six blocks to Fallon’s two.

“We just made some mistakes in big moments,” Chapin said.

The Vaqueros didn’t let the loss linger, however, beating Lowry on Saturday, 25-20, 25-16, 22-

25, 25-17.

Fernley had 49 kills against the Buckaroos, 19 of them by Menesini and 13 by Lillianna Young.

The Vaqueros also served 10 aces, had seven blocks and Alauna Escartin set up the attack with

33 assists.

“We played good in three out of four sets,” Chapin said.
