Fernley boys place seventh at Spanish Springs cross country meet

The Fernley High School boys cross country team placed seventh at the Leo Mikelonis Memorial Invitational last Saturday at Golden Eagle Park, scoring 180 points in a field of 16 teams. Joe Perkins led the Vaqueros with a ninth-place finish in 16:52. Other top finishers included Cael Wilson (32nd, 18:07), Alex Mergell (52nd, 18:48), Dominick Dietrich (54th, 19:00), and Skyler Ledesma-James (80th, 19:57). In the girls race, Fernley’s Corbyn Gillespie led the team with a 64th-place finish in 23:40, followed by Wynter Angus (87th, 26:00) and Jojo Cardinal (90th, 26:27). The Vaqueros next compete at the Clovis Invitational in Woodward Park, California.

The Fernley High School boys cross country team placed seventh last Saturday at the Leo 

Mikelonis Memorial Cross Country Invitational hosted by Spanish Springs High School at 

Golden Eagle Park. 

Fernley scored 180 team points to place seventh. Reno won the meet with 59 points, Carson was 

second with 75 and North Tahoe was third with 120. There were 140 individual runners and 16 

teams in the varsity boys race.  

Fernley’s best finisher was Joe Perkins in 9th place with a time of 16:52 on the 5,000-meter 

course. 

Cael Wilson placed 32nd with a time of 18:07, Alex Mergell came 52nd with his time of 18:48, 

Dominick Dietrich finished 54th in 19:00 and Skyler Ledesma-James was 80th with a time of 

19:57. 

There were 103 runners in the girls varsity race with seven full teams. Carson finished first as a 

team with 48 points, Douglas was second with 75 and Bishop Manogue came in third with 85 

points. Fernley had three individual runners. 

Corbyn Gillespie has the best finish for Fernley in 64th place with a time of 23:40, Wynter Angus 

finished 87th in a time of 26:00 and Jojo Cardinal came in 90th with her time of 26:27. 

This week the Vaqueros are scheduled to compete in the Clovis Invitational in Woodward Park, 

CA. The meet includes races in 20 different categories, with half on Friday and half on Saturday.
