After suffering their first loss in league play last Wednesday in Fallon, the Fernley High School
volleyball team bounced back to beat Elko and Spring Creek over the weekend.
The week’s results leave the Vaqueros tied for second place in the Northern 3A East with Dayton
with a 3-1 record, and 19-5 overall.
The Vaqueros will host Dayton at 6 p.m. Friday in their only match this week.
The Vaqueros started last week with a loss in three sets at Fallon, 17-25, 17-25, 20-25.
“Against Fallon we didn’t play our best and had too many service errors and didn’t take
advantage of opportunities they gave us,” coach Diane Chapin said.
The result was that Fallon controlled play at the net, tallying 30 kills to Fernley’s 12.
Trista Menesini had five of those kills for Fernley, Lillianna Young had four, Alauna Escartin had
three and Emma Masters had two. Menesini also led the team with 10 digs, while Jocelyn
Escartin had nine. Masters and Alauna Escartin each had four assists.
On Friday, the Vaqueros came back with a strong performance to beat Elko 25-18, 25-14, 25-19.
This time, Fernley had 33 kills, 12 of them by Young and 11 by Menesini. Jocelyn Escartin had
eight digs, Menesini had six and Young added five. Masters and Alauna set up the attack with 18
and 11 assists, respectively.
“Against Elko we played really well, limited our errors and made good defensive adjustments
when we needed to,” Chapin said.
Saturday against Spring Creek, the Vaqueros used a fast start and a strong finish to beat the
Spartans 25-13, 25-17, 20-25, 22-25, 15-11.
“We played really good in the first two sets, and then I mixed up the lineup in the next two sets
and we got out of sync,” Chapin said. “We won the 5th set after a slow start.”
Menesini had 16 kills and Young added eight as Fernley put down a total of 38.
Young made 20 digs, Tatiana Velazquez added 17 and Jocelyn Escartin had 15. Alauna Escartin
handled most of the setting with 24 assists.
