Lyon County Sheriff’s deputies responding to a report of a broken down vehicle in the Desert Creek area of Smith Valley ended up thwarting what might have been an ambush attempt.
Sheriff Brad Pope said during the Sept. 21 Lyon County Commission meeting that on Sept. 20, deputies responded to a report of a broken down vehicle near Sweetwater Summit that had a sign saying, “Please call the police.”
When the deputies got out of their vehicles, a man emerged from the tree line with his hands up.
Mono County, Calif. deputies responded to help with the call. Pope said the deputies searching the area found what appeared to be what he called a “shooter’s hide” approximately 80 yards or less from the highway. They also found a loaded shotgun and additional ammunition and other items on the ground, leading the deputies to suspect the call was a possible ambush attempt.
Pope said the man was placed under arrest and taken to a mental health facility.
“It was something that could have went really wrong,” Pope said.
