Coaches for both Fernley High School football and the Fernley Youth Football League each said the first ever FHS Youth Football Camp held last week was a successful one.
About 60 youth football players aged from 5 to 14 participated in the camp, which was conducted and coached by the high school coaches and players.
“For it being our first one we’ve ever put on it was awesome,” Fernley High coach Anfernee Sloan said. “I was extremely happy to watch our guys that are going to be representing the high school this upcoming season, take that coach role on at the camp and instruct and teach the next generation of athletes of our sport has to offer.”
Roman Sisneros of Fernley Youth Football said the youth players were excited to work with the high school coaches and players.
“Some of them asked to have pictures taken with coach Sloan, some of them asked to have pictures taken with some of the players and they all had smiles on their faces at the end of the day,” Sisneros said.
Sisneros said the camp focused on fundamentals and individual skills.
“The little guys get to the see the kids they’re going to see playing on Friday nights, they’re doing the same drills they’re doing in practice with us,” Sisneros said.
Both Sloan and Sisneros said they expect the camp to grow. The Youth Football League has about 200 players in eight teams this year, along with 160 to 180 cheerleaders split among 10 teams.
“We are endlessly working with the Youth league to come up with better ways of making it a more enjoyable, yet larger event for the sport of football in the city of Fernley and I know next year it’s going to be even better,” Sloan said.
