Soles4Souls partnership provides new shoes to students in need

The Lyon County School District received a donation of 250 pairs of brand-new shoes to support students in need through its partnership with Soles4Souls.

As part of this initiative, 188 pairs of high-quality, name-brand shoes, along with brand-new socks, were personally distributed to students across the district. The shoes were presented to students who face housing instability and other hardships that impact their education, who are protected by the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act. This federal law ensures that students facing housing instability have the same access to education as their housed peers. Students are considered homeless under McKinney-Vento if they lack a fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence.

For many of the students, it was their first time receiving shoes that were not only new, but also fashionable and comfortable.

They are super comfortable, so my feet don’t hurt when I walk or run,” one student said. “I can play tag and race my friends at recess without slipping or getting tired.”

Beyond the joy of receiving new shoes, this donation has allowed LCSD to reallocate resources, such as clothing support and funding for extracurriculars, to continue to meet the diverse and growing needs of homeless youth.

Why does the County have to pay the whole bill? Just my opinion.
