A new program is aiming to bolster medical services in rural and underserved urban communities, including Lyon County.

Nevada State Treasurer Zach Conine announced last week that 67 health care providers have been approved to receive student loan repayment through the Nevada Health Equity & Loan Assistance (HEAL) Program.

The program offers up to $120,000 in student loan repayment to providers who commit to serving in designated communities for at least five years. For 2025, the State Treasury has allocated an initial $978,000 in repayments to providers including registered nurses, physicians, pharmacists, and social workers.

“Too many Nevadans struggle to find access to quality, affordable health care, and we have a responsibility to put more health care professionals in communities that need them,” Conine said in a statement. “With today’s awards through the Nevada HEAL Program, we are attracting and retaining 67 providers in Nevada’s most rural and underserved communities.”

Recipients will practice in counties across the state, including two in Lyon County. Eligible participants must be Nevada residents, licensed to practice in the state, and commit to serving in an underserved community for at least five years.

Applications for the HEAL Program are expected to reopen in early 2026.

Why does the County have to pay the whole bill? Just my opinion.Comment publication date: 5/7/26, 10:26 AMComment source: Storey County, Tesla partner to extend I-80 Patrick on-rampComment author: Alan ReederComment text: Great guy, laughed easily, had fun with his students, enjoyed our time together at FHS!Comment publication date: 4/23/26, 10:23 PMComment source: Howard David JacksonComment author: Jack & Nancy CookComment text: Wonderful man.
