Fernley Animal Control Microchip Program now Available

A microchip program for pets that was approved April 16 by the Fernley City Council is now under way.

Residents can contact Fernley Animal Control and schedule an appointment for microchip implantation into their pets. The cost for the microchip is $15 or a donation of a minimum 10 pound bag of unopened pet food. The pet food donations will be used to create a pet pantry program for residents experiencing financial hardship.

Unlike collars, microchips are permanent and are a surefire way to make sure your information is always traveling with your pet. A microchip is a small remote frequency identification device (RFID) that is about the size of a grain of rice. The device is implanted under the skin of the pet and when scanned, produces a unique identification code. This code can then be used to find pet and owner information and helps to reunite pets in the field, rather than impounding at the shelter.

Microchips cannot be tracked to determine location of a missing pet.
