Robert Perea, The Fernley Reporter

The Fernley High School track and field team is sending five boys and eight girls to compete in a total of 13 events in this weekend’s 3A State Championships held Friday and Saturday at Carson High School.

The boys team had two regional champion relay teams, while defending state champion Kiriann Johnson won her third consecutive regional championship in the pole vault. The girls finsihed seventh in the team standings with 63 points, while the boys finished eighth with 58 points.

Johnson tied last year’s state winning vault of 11 feet while no other competitor went higher than nine feet.

The relay team of Noah Spencer, Bryce Dunagan-Stephens, Tristen Martinez and Keeshawn Love won both the 4x100 and 4x200 relays, posting times of 44.47 in the 4x400 and 1:32.56 in the 4x200.

Love also had an individual second place finish in the 110 hurdles with a time of 14.98, and he nearly made state in the 300 hurdles, placing fifth in 42.44.

Dunagan-Stephens also qualified for state in two events, placing fourth in the high jump with a leap of 5 feet, 10 inches and fourth in the long jump with a mark of 19-1.75.

Kael Paz was the other state qualifier for the boys team, placing fourth in the 3200 with a time of 10:15.43. He was nearly a three-event qualifier, but placed fifth in the 1500 with a time of 4:44.12, missing a state qualifying time by 2.4 seconds, and he was part of the 4x800 relay that finished fifth with a time of 8:42.25, missing state by half a second. He was joined in that relay by Angelo Mulei, Alex Mergell and Andrew Peterson.

For the girls, Johnson also qualified in the triple jump with a fourth place finish for a jump of 32-7.5.

Kendall Arnaud tied for first but finished second because of a tiebreaker in the high jump with a leap of 5 feet.

Justice Martell-Artiaga is a two-event qualifier for the girls, with a third place finish in the 100 hurdles with a time of 16.95, and she threw the discus 95 feet to place third.

Gabrielle Blunier qualified for state in the shot put with a throw of 32-4.25 to place third.

The relay team of Jennica Stephens, Naomi Wyant, Abi McIntyre and Johnson placed fifth in the 4x100 relay with a time of 53.73 and Wyant came in fifth in the long jump with a leap of 14-11 and in the triple jump with a leap of 32-7.
