The Fernley High School cross country, girls soccer and volleyball teams will be in postseason action over the next several days.

The cross country teams are scheduled to compete in the Northern Region meet Friday at Rancho San Rafael Park in Reno. The top four teams from the Northern League and the top seven individuals from nonqualifying teams will qualify for the 3A state meet, which while be held Nov. 4, also at Rancho San Rafael Park.

The 3A girls soccer quarterfinals will be played at the home of the higher seed on Oct. 27, 28 and 30. Fernley will play at Truckee at 3 p.m. Monday. The region semifinals and finals are Nov. 3 and 4 at Elko.

Fernley is the No. 4 seed from the east with an 11-6-1 league record, and 11-7-2 overall. Truckee went 13-1 in the Northern 3A West to earn the No. 1 seed. Fernley and Truckee played twice during the regular season, with Truckee winning 8-0 at home on Sept. 11 and the teams tying 1-1 in Fernley on Sept. 26.

Fernley wrapped up the regular season Tuesday with a 1-1 tie against Dayton. Ashley Shock scored Fernley’s goal in the first half, off an assist from Devon Schmeter.

The volleyball quarterfinals will be played at host sites on Saturday, Oct. 28. As the No. 4 seed from the East, Fernley will play at Truckee (West No. 1) at noon Saturday. The semifinals and finals are Nov. 3 and 4 in Truckee.

The Vaqueros went 2-1 over the past week to earn their way into the region tournament. On Oct. 18 they beat Dayton in four sets, 25-14, 25-23, 21-25, 25-23.

“Fernley played some of the best volleyball I’ve seen all season,” coach Zach Wilhelm said. “It feel like we have finally hit our groove.”

Last Friday, the Vaqueros lost in five sets to Fallon, which finished No. 1 in the East, 25-19, 24-26, 25-23, 14-25, 10-15. Then they bounced back Saturday to beat Lowry in three straight, 25-11, 25-22, 25-23.

“In these two matches our team worked very hard and came together to play the best volleyball we have seen all season,” Wilhelm said. “With the narrow loss to Fallon we showed ourselves we have what it takes to go toe to toe with a No. 1 seed and we’re ready to take on Truckee.”

Why does the County have to pay the whole bill? Just my opinion.
