Fernley city councilman Albert Torres will be the guest speaker for the next meeting of the Fernley Republican Women on Tuesday, Oct. 17 at the Fernley Senior Center.
A light meal will be served at 6 p.m. and the meeting will start promptly at 6:30 p.m. Torres will be speaking about the issues facing the City of Fernley. The public is always invited to attend.
Torres is a third generation Nevadan and has lived in Lyon County for more than 40 years. Professionally, he dedicated 25 years of service to law enforcement in northern Nevada with his highest rank being the Undersheriff in Lyon County. He became a founding member and Board Chairman for the Lyon County Mental Health Task Force and became a board member for NAMI, the National Alliance on Mental Illness. Torres holds a degree in criminal justice, general business, and business management. He was also a founding board member for the Fernley Boys & Girls Club. He is currently a substitute teacher for Lyon County School District.
Torres currently serves on the City’s Water team, Legislative team, and is the Fernley Convention and Tourism Authority Co-chair. His term expires in 2024.
The FRW’s Caring for America Program collects non-perishable foods for the Fernley Food Bank and the Armed Forces/Homeland Security Program collects cleaning supplies, food and personal care items, along with donations of funds, for the Veterans Guest House in Reno. The Literacy Committee collects new and lightly used children's books for Bow Wow Books, an organization that teamed up with the Fernley library. Bow Wow Reading Dogs are non-judgmental certified therapy dogs who listen to children reading aloud. All contributions for these programs will be greatly appreciated.
