Fernley volleyball splits pair of matches
The Fernley High School volleyball team defeated North Valleys in five sets last Thursday, then lost in four sets to Dayton on Tuesday.
At North Valleys, the Vaqueros won 25-15, 25-27, 18-25, 25-16, 15-9. Justice Artiaga led the Vaqueros with nine kills and four blocks and Kendall Arnaud added seven kills and two blocks. Jennica Stephens led the defense with 15 digs, while Hunter Lyle added 13 and also dished out 14 assists.
Tuesday in Dayton, the Vaqueros came up short, 19-25, 12-25, 25-23, 26-26.
Sage Jackson led the team with seven kills and Marli O’Neil led passing and serving with 36 digs and five aces.
The Vaqueros will be back in action Saturday, hosting South Tahoe at 1 p.m.
Boys soccer
The boys soccer team lost each of its three matches last week, 6-1 to Truckee on Monday, 2-0 to Fallon on Friday and 1-0 at Lowry on Saturday.
Fernley is now 1-6 overall, 1-5 in the Northern 3A East.
Girls soccer
The Vaqueros followed up a two-game losing streak last week with two wins. After an 8-0 loss to Truckee last Monday and a 2-0 loss to Fallon Friday the Vaqueros beat Lowry 1-0 Saturday and Dayton 4-1 Monday.
Naomi Wyant scored off an assist from Kiriann Johnson in the win over the Buckaroos. Jaelece Wasson had 22 saves in goal.
Against Dayton, Johnson and Wyant each had two goals, while Kensey Kreller had three assists and Wasson added one assist. Wasson also had two saves in goal against the DustDevils.
The Vaqueros are off this weekend, and return to action Sept. 26 against Truckee.
Cross country
Fernley’s Kael Paz and Kori Scott were the individual winners in the Roadhill Invitational at Fernley High School last Thursday.
Paz had a winning time of 18:19 in the boys race, beating runner-up Luke Swanson of Bishop Manogue by 41 seconds, leading the Vaqueros to a third place finish as a team.
Manogue finished first as a team with 42 points, while Hug was second with 56 and Fernley was third with 68.
In the girls race, Scott was the winner with a time of 25:12, with teammate Laila Kinnick second in 25:47 and Trinity Garcia fourth with a time of 26:29. Hugh and Bishop Manogue were the only schools to field full teams, with Hug winning by a point, 28-29.
