Lyon County, the cities of Fernley and Yerington, fire protection districts, and other participating agencies are requesting residents and business owners share concerns on natural, man-made and technological hazards as part of the 2023 regional Hazard Mitigation Plan (HMP) update. The regional Hazard Mitigation Plan is a tool for governments and nonprofit agencies to prioritize projects that will draw down the risk for emergencies and disasters. Led by the Lyon County Local Emergency Planning Committee (LEPC), participating agencies are profiling the community’s risk for natural, man-made, and technological hazards and developing goals to reduce the impacts of each hazard.
Local governments are required by the Disaster Act of 2000 to complete a Hazard Mitigation Plan every five years to receive non-emergency disaster assistance. According to FEMA’s Mitigation Action Portfolio, natural hazards in the United States from 1980 to 2018 led to an average annual $42.8 billion of property damage and insurance claims, thousands of deaths and injuries, and livelihood disruptions. With an increase in extreme events, the average cost per year nearly doubles to $99 billion. Nevada is estimated to have had over $20 million in public infrastructure damages from the March 2023 Atmospheric River flood event.
Community Outreach Survey
Lyon County and participating entities are requesting residents and business owners complete the 2023 Hazard Mitigation Plan – Community Outreach Survey at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/Lyon2023HMP by 5 p.m. Sept. 22.
All individual responses are confidential and will be utilized for planning purposes only.
Citizens can also participate in the hazard mitigation planning process by attending a LEPC Hazard Mitigation Workshop. The next LEPC Workshop will be Wednesday, Sept. 13 at 10 a.m. at the Lyon County Admin Complex – 27 S. Main Street, Yerington, NV 89447. The agenda with additional meeting information will be posted to the Lyon County Agenda Center.
