Student-run farmer's market features four Lyon County schools

For the first time in Carson City, the nationally recognized nonprofit Green Our Planet will host a student-run farmers market from 10 a.m. –1 p.m. at the Nevada Capitol Building on Tuesday, May 16. Featuring five schools from northern Nevada, this coincides with the 10-year anniversary of Green Our Planet and their efforts to make a difference in the lives of children and in the world.

Founded in 2013, Green Our Planet runs the largest school garden and hydroponics programs in the United States working with more than 500 schools and impacting over 200,000 students. The garden program provides the ability for students to learn about nutrition, science, conservation and math through hands-on experience in outdoor gardens and hydroponics laboratories. The student-run farmers market will feature produce grown from Dayton High School, Dayton Intermediate School, Riverview Elementary School, Sutro Elementary School and Virginia City High School. Around 50 student farmers will be in attendance to sell their produce and crafts to the public with all proceeds returning to the schools to amplify and preserve the schools’ garden programs.

Green Our Planet says that the Nevada Department of Education has also been a crucial partner in getting this event set up in Carson City, Nevada. Green Our Planet will host this event with support from Bank of Nevada, and United Way of Southern Nevada.
