After one blowout and one battle last week, the Fernley High School girls basketball heads to Fallon tonight to renew their rivalry with the Greenwave.
The Vaqueros beat Spring Creek 49-13 last Friday and Elko 56-49 on Saturday to run their record to 7-0 in the Northern 3A East and their winning streak to 23 games.
They take on Fallon at 6 p.m., then travel to Winnemucca to face Lowry at 1 p.m. Saturday.
Against Spring Creek last Friday, the Vaqueros dominated the first half, rolling to a 38-9 halftime lead before taking their foot off the gas.
“The girls were really clicking the first half on both ends of the court,” coach Ralph Dunn said. “Second half intensity dropped off and only scored 11 points in the second half and just two points the fourth quarter, but game was already decided.”
Jaelese Wasson was the only player to score in double figures for the Vaqueros with 18, but a total of eight players scored, Jasmyne Torres had 9 points and Tia Otuafi added 8.
It was a different story Saturday, as Elko gave the Vaqueros all they could handle for three quarters. Elko led 27-26 at the half and 40-39 going to the fourth quarter, before Fernley put the clamps on defensively to outscore the Indians 17-9 in the fourth.
“Hats off to Elko,” Dunn said. “They brought intensity the whole game. We needed a game like this. Our girls had to dig down and play with more desire and intensity in the fourth quarter to pull away.”
Wasson again was the leading scorer with 19 points, while Torres had 14 and Otuafi scored 13.
Dunn said Fernley’s home crowd helped push them over the top.
“The community support was so amazing and the girls feed off the energy,” he said.
