The Food Bank of Northern Nevada is asking volunteers in many of the far-reaching neighborhoods of their 90,000 square mile service area to help the effort in fighting hunger by volunteering.
The Food Bank serves all of northern Nevada as well as many communities on the eastern slope of the Sierra mountains in California. The organization offers several direct service programs that need volunteers in many rural communities. They also are conducting a year-long survey called the Feeding Our Community Survey and they need volunteers for that project as well.
The Food Bank is currently recruiting volunteers in the communities of Hawthorne, Dayton, Silver Springs, Yerington, Wadsworth, Incline Village, Fallon, Fernley, and Carson City.
The Food Bank of Northern Nevada is operating a program that helps seniors get the fresh foods they need to be healthy. The program is called Produce on Wheels and several volunteers are needed to assist with distributions. The program is operating with a new farmers market style truck from which seniors can select their produce. Volunteers will help assemble the bags so less people are handling the produce as a COVID protocol.
Opportunities to help with this program are available in many rural communities as well as in Washoe County. Volunteer sessions to help with Produce on Wheels are about an hour and a half, depending on the length of the individual distribution. The distributions are during the day and during the work week. The Feeding our Community Survey is a project to gather vital information about the state of hunger in the northern Nevada area. The Food Bank of Northern Nevada has partnered with University of Nevada, Reno on the project and they are in the collection phase of the survey. Volunteers are needed in Washoe County as well as several rural communities to help pass out invitations for those served by the Food Bank to take the survey online.
The survey is a year-long project so volunteer opportunities will continue to be posted and training is provided for the task. There are also some opportunities for clerical support for the survey, which can be done remotely, if the volunteer has internet access and a computer. Sessions to help with the survey are generally held during the day and during the work week and are about two hours each time. Mobile Harvest is a large direct service program delivering fresh produce and other perishable food to families that also relies on volunteers. The Food Bank recruits for volunteers in Washoe County and rural areas and volunteers help pack bags with produce and offer it to families who are in attendance. The program operates in a drive through format as well as a walk-up and varies by site. Volunteer sessions for Mobile Harvest are outside and are generally two to three hours in length, during the day and during the work week.
