Sisolak says schools to continue to provide meals through closures

Robert Perea, The Fernley Reporter

With Governor Steve Sisolak ordering all schools statewide to close through April 6, and with Spring Break in Lyon County scheduled for April 6-10, all Lyon County schools will be closed through at least April 13.

However, students, particularly those on free or reduced lunches who rely on those meals every day, will still be able to get those meals while schools are closed.

“Rest assured, our children who rely on those programs will not go hungry,” Governor Steve Sisolak said during a press conference Sunday evening in Las Vegas.

“Over the next few days, our district will be sending out communication to school administration, staff and our communities about specific details on how this closure will be conducted including access to education materials and the offering of nutrition services for our families that may need this support,” Lyon County School District superientendent Way Workman said in a statement Sunday afternoon.

Directing his remarks to students, Sisolak also emphasized that this is not an extended spring break.

"We are closing schools, not just for your safety, but the safety of your neighbors and your family," he said. "What you do over the next few weeks will directly affect your family's health."

Workman urged parents to visit regularly the district’s website at www.lyoncsd.org and the Infinite Campus portal for updates on this situation.

Why does the County have to pay the whole bill? Just my opinion.Comment publication date: 5/7/26, 10:26 AMComment source: Storey County, Tesla partner to extend I-80 Patrick on-rampComment author: Alan ReederComment text: Great guy, laughed easily, had fun with his students, enjoyed our time together at FHS!Comment publication date: 4/23/26, 10:23 PMComment source: Howard David JacksonComment author: Jack & Nancy CookComment text: Wonderful man.
