Boys soccer: Vaqueros aim to complete perfect league season Wednesday

On Saturday, Oct. 26, the Fernley Boys Varsity Soccer team improved their perfect record to 12-0 with a 4-2 win over Dayton.

With the weather breezy but otherwise beautiful and going with the wind for the first half, Jacob McCreary opened the scoring in the second minute of the game with a nice move to break free and a low shot to the goaltender’s right to make the score 1-0, Vaqueros.

After McCreary’s goal, Fernley had several nice passing plays that resulted in good scoring opportunities, but the Vaqueros were unable to take advantage and score at that point. Sergio Alvarez and Angel Martinez made many nice plays and passes that resulted in good Vaquero scoring opportunities that just didn’t click. Dayton, possibly bothered by a wind that straightened the flag directly against them, mostly tried long kicks, hoping their forwards could beat the Vaquero defense for a scoring chance. But the home team defense, led by Corbin Mulei, Drake Lanning, Hayden Fagundes, Carson Humes, and Isaac O’Neill thwarted every effort the Dust Devils made to get a good shot away.

While Fernley was subbing liberally, Sergio Alvarez took a nice pass from Robert Whalen and drove a low shot past the goaltender and into the net to make the score 2-0 in the 38th minute of play. One minute later, Whalen again set up Alvarez, who scored to put Fernley ahead 3-0. A minute after that, Dayton turned a nice play into a goal that made the score 3-1 at the half.

With the wind velocity increasing, switching sides for the second half seemed to help the Dust Devils and they scored on a pretty corner kick play to make the score 3-2.

In the game’s 58th minute with Dayton pressing, McCreary converted a beautiful Sergio Alvarez pass into a goal and a 4-2 Vaquero lead, which ended up as the final score.

The Vaqueros will put their perfect record on the line on Wednesday, Oct 30 at 4 p.m. against Yerington at Fernley High School. This will be the Vaqueros last regular season game, and community support is appreciated.
