Vaqueros bounce back from loss in league opener

Vaqueros bounce back from loss in league opener

Robert Perea, The Fernley Reporter

After being unable to protect a big lead in a loss to South Tahoe in the league opener last Friday, the Fernley High School boys basketball team didn’t take long to apply the lessons it learned.

The Vaqueros used another big early lead to roll past North Valleys Tuesday night to even their league record at 1-1.

The Vaqueros started league play with a 64-52 loss at South Tahoe last Friday, in a game they led 22-8 after the first quarter.

They still led 35-26 at the half and 44-40 entering the third quarter, before a huge run by South Tahoe in the fourth quarter turned the game around.

“We were ahead for three quarters and made too many mistakes in the fourth to get a win,” coach Derek Miller said. “We need to learn how to execute better down the stretch. That will come with more court time.”

They did exactly that Tuesday.  Fernley led 15-6 after one quarter, and stretched that margin to 34-14 at the half, and held a 50-27 advantage going to the fourth quarter.

Against South Tahoe, Drew Miller led the Vaqueros with 17 points and Rei Robinett added 16. Against North Valleys, Robinett poured in 21 points and Miller had 18, while Daunte Ceresola added eight and Carson Kingston scored seven.

Why does the County have to pay the whole bill? Just my opinion.Comment publication date: 5/7/26, 10:26 AMComment source: Storey County, Tesla partner to extend I-80 Patrick on-rampComment author: Alan ReederComment text: Great guy, laughed easily, had fun with his students, enjoyed our time together at FHS!Comment publication date: 4/23/26, 10:23 PMComment source: Howard David JacksonComment author: Jack & Nancy CookComment text: Wonderful man.
