Nevada Museum of Art seeks original entries for 2019 scholastic art awards 

Northern Nevada students 13-18 years of age are invited to submit creative and original artwork to nation’s longest-running art competition.

The Nevada Museum of Art invites Northern Nevada students ages 13-18 to submit their creative and original work to the 2019 Scholastic Art Awards. Students can submit to any of the Awards’ art categories, including ceramics, mixed media, digital art, painting, drawing, photography, fashion, film & animation, and more. Submissions will be judged on originality, technical skill, and the emergence of a unique, personal vision. The deadline to submit is Thursday, December 13, 2018.

Since 1999, the Nevada Museum of Art, Donald W. Reynolds Center for the Visual Arts, E. L. Wiegand Gallery has overseen the Northern Nevada regional visual arts component of the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. Every year, diverse and exceptional artworks, representing the talents of middle and high school students from Carson City, Churchill, Douglas, Elko, Eureka, Humboldt, Lander, Lyon, Mineral, Pershing, Storey, Washoe, and White Pine counties are submitted. Jacque Dawson, Nevada Museum of Art Nell J. Redfield School Services Manager, and Jen Henry, Nevada Museum of Art Education Coordinator, oversee the program.

“Enhancing educational opportunities in the community is our priority,” said Dawson. “We believe that encouraging students to cultivate these skills creates innovative thinkers for the future.”

Last year, a panel of local judges sorted through more than 2,200 works -- a record number of entries -- submitted in 16 categories for the visual arts component of the Awards. Of those regional entries, 107 individual pieces and five portfolios received regional Gold Key awards and went on to compete with all other Gold Key winners from across the nation.

The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards is the longest-running recognition initiative for creative teens. For over 90 years the Awards have identified and awarded some of the nation’s most accomplished visionaries and encouraged young artists and writers to pursue a creative life. Students submitting original work to the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards follow in the footsteps of distinguished Awards alumni including Andy Warhol, Truman Capote, Sylvia Plath, Richard Avedon and Reno’s own Michael Sarich.

Northern Nevada students are encouraged to submit original artwork to the 2019 Scholastic Art Awards now through December 13. Students participating can visit on the Scholastic Art & Writing website, http://bit.ly/ScholasticArtAwards2019, for details regarding submission. Students will be notified of their award status by Tuesday, January 22, 2019. Awards will be distributed during a ceremony at the Nevada Museum of Art on Thursday March 14, 2019. Select artworks will be exhibited at the Nevada Museum of Art and at the Holland Project from February 22 to March 15, 2019.
