Beginning Sunday evening, July 22, drivers will see overnight single lane closures on USA Parkway as the Nevada Department of Transportation continues a project to install a permanent traffic signal at Electric Avenue for enhanced traffic safety and flow.

Various lane and roadway shoulder closures have taken place over recent months for utility relocation needed for the new traffic signal. As turn lane construction and traffic signal installation begins, intermittent single lane closures will be in place on USA Parkway between Interstate 80 and Waltham Way from 6 p.m. to 3 a.m. nightly Sunday evenings through Friday mornings. Speeds are reduced to 35 mph. One lane will always be available in each direction. The lane reductions are anticipated to take place through mid-September.

NDOT will install a four-way traffic signal at the intersection of USA Parkway and Electric Avenue/East Britain Drive. Two left turn lanes will be installed from southbound USA Parkway to eastbound Electric Avenue, providing dedicated turns for heavy shift and truck traffic turning from the parkway to warehousing areas. A dedicated turn lane will also be constructed allowing traffic to more safely merge from Electric Avenue onto northbound USA Parkway. The signal and turn lanes will help enhance traffic safety and mobility. Roadway lighting will also be enhanced.

Last year, NDOT restriped and resurfaced the eastbound I-80 to southbound USA Parkway ramp to provide two free right turn lanes and quicker and safer turns for commuters traveling from Reno/Sparks to USA Parkway. An additional travel lane was also added to southbound USA Parkway between I-80 and Electric Avenue. Temporary traffic signals were also installed at USA Parkway and Waltham Way and the I-80 westbound off-ramp to USA Parkway.

As traffic increases with enhanced development at the Reno-Tahoe Industrial Center, NDOT is also evaluating potential regional interstate improvements in future years.

Why does the County have to pay the whole bill?
