Fernley track team qualifies five individuals, one relay team for state meet

Led by two individual champions, the Fernley High School track and field teams qualified five individuals, in a total of eight events, for this week’s State meet, being held Friday and Saturday at Carson High School.

Both Fernley teams placed seventh in last week’s Northern 3A Track and Field Championships in Yerington. The boys team finished seventh with 60.5 points. Fallon won the team championship with 122 points, and Truckee was second with 114. The girls were seventh with 45 points. Spring Creek was the team champion with 131.5 points, narrowly beating Truckee, which finished with 129.5 points.

Individually, Nicholas Bernardo and Ricky Dumont each won event championships.

Bernardo won the boys 110 hurdles with a time of 15.76, and qualified for State in the 300 hurdles, finishing third with a time of 42.64. He will run the 300 hurdles at 7:05 p.m. Friday and the 110 hurdles Saturday at 9:15 a.m.

Dumont won the discus with a throw of 145-11, and will throw in his quest for a state title beginning at 9 a.m. Saturday.

Aaron Proctor finished third in the 100 meters with a time of 11.5, but will not compete in the State meet.

The girls team had three individual qualifiers and a relay team.

Brittney Gaitan qualified in both the shot put and discus, finishing second in the shot put with a throw of 33-2 and third in the discus with a throw of 108-01. She will throw the discus starting at 3 p.m. Friday and the shot put starting at 10:30 a.m. Saturday.

Riana Allred finished third in the 100 hurdles with a time of 16.93 and will run Friday at 4:14 p.m.

Piper Crook finished third in the 800 meters with a time of 2:25.63 and will run Saturday at 12:30 p.m.

The girls 4x800 relay team of Janae Derley, Olivia Schrock, Samantha Manning and Crook finished third with a time of 10:21.66, and will run Friday at 3:30 p.m. Fernley is the defending state champion in the 4x800.
