Fresh off their first series win of the season, the Fernley High School baseball team has a chance to get back into the race for a playoff spot when it faces Spring Creek in a three-game series starting Friday afternoon.
The Vaqueros softball team, meanwhile, is in a three-way fight for first place. The Vaqueros are 8-1 in league play, while Lowry is 10-1 and Fallon is 9-1.
The baseball team won two of three games against Dayton Monday and Tuesday, and takes a 3-7 record in the Northern 3A to face Spring Creek, which is 5-8, and currently holds sixth place and the last seed for the regional tournament.
Monday, the Vaqueros and DustDevils split a pair of shutouts, Dayton winning the first game 6-0 behind Isaac Von Schoff, who struck out 11 and allowed only three hits with no walks in 6 1/3 innings.
Mason Timbrook matched that outing in the second game for Fernley, tossing a complete game 3-hitter with 11 strikeouts, while walking four in an 8-0 win. Zach Burns and Danny Moreno each drove in two runs for Fernley.
In Tuesday’s rubber match, Fernley scored six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Josh Kirk drive in three runs for Fernley and Jay King, who missed much of the early season recovering from a broken arm suffered during basketball season, hit a home run and drove in a pair.
The softball team swept three games from Fernley, 9-1 and 12-4 on Monday, and 14-4 Tuesday.
McKenna Montgomery was the winning pitcher in the first game, striking out six and allowing four hits and two walks in seven innings.
Montgomery and Lexi Nelson each had two hits.
In Monday’s second game, Abigail Abrahamzon was the winning pitcher, with six hits allowed, two walks and three strikeouts.
Aschlynn Roemer hit a home run and drove in four.
Tuesday, Reese Jones drove in five runs, including a grand slam, while Ariana Ruiz was the winning pitcher, allowing four hits and two walks, and Macie Kirk struck out three in an inning of relief.
