Reignited controlled burn turns into wildfire

A wildfire that started when a controlled burn near Fremont St. reignited was extinguished Tuesday without any homes being damaged.

According to North Lyon County Fire Protection District Chief Scott Huntley, at approximately 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, a permitted control burn by a resident on Fremont re-started due to strong winds.

Firefighters were able to contain the fire to outside structures, despite the windy conditions. The fire ran through a ditch, into the yards of the homes on Fremont St. and Diablo Lane.

Huntley said North Lyon County Fire Protection District responded with two engines and later a third engine responded. North Lyon's Rehab Team assisted and mutual aid was provided by Storey County Fire and Central Lyon.

One North Lyon unit remained on the scene with Nevada Division of Forestry crews after the fire was put out to ensure there were no further hazards.

“We remind residents to be careful when having permitted burns and follow guidelines,” Huntley said. “Weather in Northern Nevada can be extremely unpredictable even when conditions are forecast. We thank everyone for their assistance.”

Huntley said firefighters and residents are fortunate there were no injuries or further damage to property due to the district’s limited resources.

“For everyone involved, we feel for that lost property,” Huntley said. “I know there is remorse and sadness. Let this help the community by reminding how important fire safety is. Also be proud how neighbors worked together today.”
