Nevada softball celebrates Jayme King Day Sunday

Robert Perea, The Fernley Reporter

Sunday will be Jayme King Day for the University of Nevada softball team, as the Wolf Pack will honor its former player with a special ceremony after the conclusion of the first game of a doubleheader.

The first game will be the conclusion of Friday’s game, which was suspended because of weather, with Nevada leading San Jose St. 1-0 in the top of the second inning.

King, a Fernley High School graduate, died at the age of 24 in 2015 after three battles with cancer. She was a three-sport star athlete at Fernley, before playing volleyball and softball at Shasta College in Redding, Calif., before transferring to Nevada, where she played in 36 games in 2011.

But, after dealing with knee pain throughout that season, she was diagnosed after the season with Ewing’s sarcoma, a rare bone cancer.
