Lyon County Sheriff Al McNeil will be the guest speaker for the next meeting of the Fernley Republican Women on Nov. 14.
The meeting will be held at the Fernley High School Library, 1300 Highway 95A. A light meal will be served at 6 p.m. and the meeting will start promptly at 6:30 p.m. The public is always invited to attend. Please note that the meeting will be one week earlier than normal due to the Thanksgiving holiday.
McNeil will speak about the changes he has seen in Lyon County since the marijuana initiative has been implemented.
McNeil was born in Mountain View, Calif. in 1964 near the military base located at Moffett Field. He then grew up in Michigan as a young child, where he learned to love the outdoors. Because of the economic recession during the late 1970s, his family moved to California during his high school years. After graduating high school, he enlisted in the Marine Corps and faithfully served his country for almost 21 years.
Upon his retirement from the Marine Corps, he chose to live in Mason Valley, where he and his wife, Shannon, raised five children. In 2002, he began working for the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office. He has served in every position available to him, including assignments in the jail, patrol, detective, gang unit, sex offender task force, street enforcement team, S.W.A.T., and field training officer. McNeil was elected Lyon County Sheriff in 2014.
The FRW’s Caring for America/Adopt-a-Soldier Program collects non-perishable foods for the Fernley Food Bank, along with donations of funds and care items for their adopted soldiers. The soldiers need single serving food items, personal care items and, most especially, cards and letters from home. The Literacy Committee collects new children's books for the Ronald McDonald House and Renown Hospital's Children's Ward. All contributions for these important programs will be greatly appreciated.
