Volunteers join United Way to deliver book bags to Fernley 1st graders

United Way of Northern Nevada and the Sierra (UWNNS) assembled book bags and delivered on Thursday, Dec. 9 to 1st grade students in three Fernley elementary schools.

“UWNNS is focused on grade-level reading, and the first step towards that important milestone is making sure children and families have access to books at home,” said Michael Brazier, President and CEO of UWNNS. “We are excited to be able to partner with Churchill County School District to encourage reading over the winter break.”

Lyon County is one of the selected counties to receive book bags in time for Winter Break as part of UWNNS’s Winter Literacy Kit project. Books were delivered to students at Fernley Elementary, East Valley Elementary, and Cottonwood Elementary.

In total, the project resulted in over 2,500 new books distributed, at no cost to families. Each book bag contains four new, age-appropriate books to more than 600 students across Lyon County, Churchill County, Douglas County, and Washoe County.

The book bags are made possible through the support of Trex. a local corporate partner.

“By partnering with us, corporate partners like Trex can really maximize every dollar and invest in the community they live and work in. Partnerships like these help us reach more families with new books and future programming.”
