The Fernley High School baseball team will play at Wooster in a single-elimination play-in game for a berth in the 3A Northern Regional Tournament Saturday at 1 p.m.
The winner will advance to face North Valleys, the West No. 2 seed, at 8 a.m. next Thursday in the regional tournament in Spring Creek.
Under the league’s new playoff format, the No. 3 seeds from each division host the No. 4 seeds to round out the six-team field. Fallon is the East No. 1 seed and would face the winner of Thursday’s 8 a.m. game. Truckee is the No. 1 seed from the West and has a bye to the second round. Spring Creek, the No. 2 from the East, will face either South Tahoe or Elko, who square off Saturday in the other play-in game at 1 p.m. in Elko.
The Vaqueros finished as the No. 4 seed in the East with a 5-9 league record. Wooster finished 8-7 in the west and won the No. 3 seed by a tiebreaker over South Tahoe.
The Vaqueros and Colts played three times during the regular season, splitting a doubleheader on March 9 with a 7-5 Fernley win in the first game and a 1-0 Wooster win in the second game. Wooster then won the series with a 12-5 win on March 14.
