Every year, law enforcement officers from across the state join together for a relay run from Las Vegas to Carson City to carry the names of all of the officers in Nevada who have lost their lives in the line of duty.
That annual run culminates at the state capitol in Carson City for the Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Ceremony which will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday.
This year’s relay began April 24th and the officers running the final leg of the relay are expected to reach the Capitol Complex about 1:30.
More than 150 names are on the Nevada Fallen Officers Memorial Wall in Carson City, and five more names will be added to the wall this year. Among them is Officer Anthony Francone of the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribal Police, who was killed on Aug. 24, 2023 when he was hit by a vehicle driven by a suspect he was attempting to stop. Also being added this year are Sgt. Michael Abbate, Trooper Alberto Felix and Trooper Clifford Fontaine of the Nevada State Police and Corrections Officer Victor Hunter.
The names of three Lyon County Sheriff’s deputies are on the wall – George Rice, who was shot by a suspect in 1984, Mick Serenko, who died of a heart attack while on duty in 2004 and John King, who contracted Covid while on duty and died in 2021.
