Victim, suspect identified in Mesa Drive shooting

The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office has identified the victim in a homicide Aug. 29 on Mesa Drive as Vincent Eugene Small, and the suspect who was arrested as Edward Doyle Small. Edward Small remains in custody in the Lyon County jail, charged with first degree murder with the use of a deadly weapon.

At 9:46 a.m., the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a shooting in the 900 block of Mesa Drive in Fernley. The caller advised that someone had been shot and the suspect left the scene in a vehicle.

Deputies responded to the scene and found a person who had been shot and was dead. During their investigation, deputies gathered determined the incident stemmed from a family disturbance and the suspect fled in a vehicle and was reported to be in an adjacent neighborhood.

Additional deputies responded to the area of Truckee Lane and found the suspect parked on Stock Lane. A perimeter was established and deputies were able to take the suspect into custody without further incident.

Detectives responded to the scene and took over the investigation.

A temporary shelter in place order was issued for the neighborhood around Truckee Lane, while deputies took the suspect into custody. Main Street, Truckee Lane and Stock Lane were all closed for a short time while deputies were working in the area.

The sheriff’s office says all of the parties involved have been identified and that there are no persons outstanding. Detectives are actively investigating. At this time the investigation is ongoing and no further information is being released. LCSO says there is no threat to the public.
