North Lyon Fire hosting CERT academy in October

The Fernley Reporter

Want to have some fun but learn some very helpful things in case of a major earthquake or other mass casualty event? North Lyon County Fire Protection District’s next CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) Academy is in October 2016. Enrollment is free.

Among the things taught at the CERT Academy are how to use a fire extinguisher; fire suppression safety, disaster psychology, ways to prepare for a terrorist incident, fire and utility hazards, public health considerations, patient evaluation, etc.

If interested, contact the CERT Coordinator at the Fire District’s Headquarters, 195 E. Main Street, Fernley, (775) 575-3310, or go to the Fire District’s website www.northlyonfire.com, and when you click on “News” the CERT Academy Flier will pop up. Click on the Flier and that will take you to the CERT web page, with all the documentation that is required. All forms (Flier, Syllabus and registration form) are PDFs.

While not a prerequisite, there is an Independent Study course available online through FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency), IS 317, Introduction to Community Emergency Response Teams (at https://emilms.fema.gov/IS0317/). That provides an excellent background for the hands-on training that will be provided. If you do not complete the course, the information you learn will nonetheless be helpful.

For additional information, contact the Fire District’s CERT Coordinator at (775) 575-3310.
