The Fernley Friends of the Library (FOL) sponsored the semi-annual library book sale on Saturday, May 19. An entire bag of books cost only $5. George Butterfield, the Secretary/Treasurer for the Fernley FOL says, “We organize the book sales every October and May each year. Almost every dollar we collect goes back to the library for various activities such as story time, Bow Wow Book Club, movie night, and El Día de los Niños Celebration. The Fernley FOL may also buy such things as shelves and some equipment.”
Lyon County does not provide money for these activities. As a matter of fact, ever since the Great Recession, the library budget has been significantly cut. Unlike some Lyon County services, libraries are not mandated to be funded.
Butterfield is a retired high school teacher from Hawaii. He and his wife have lived in Fernley for about 15 years.
If you are interested in supporting your library by joining the Fernley FOL, you may obtain a form to fill out at the library’s front desk. Individual membership is $5, family membership is $10. For those who wish to contributed even more to the FOL, there are Bronze, Silver and Gold memberships. The Friends of the Library meet on the first Tuesday of the month at 5:30 p.m. at the Fernley Branch Library.
