Lyon County has experienced a recent number of warm days, signaling summer is fast approaching. This is a wonderful relief from the harsh days of winter, but the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office is already seeing a rise of vehicle burglaries – especially in the communities of Dayton and Fernley.
With the warmer weather, many people leave windows open in their cars in order to stay cool. Unfortunately, this also provides crimes of opportunity by giving burglars an easier time into vehicles.
According to LCSO Investigators, by simply making sure to lock up windows and doors before you leave can make all the difference. In addition, it’s common for individuals to walk through neighborhoods at night looking for unlocked vehicles and easy targets for criminal opportunity.
The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office recommends residents practice the following basic safety tips:
• Roll up your windows and lock your vehicle. The majority of these burglaries occur to unlocked vehicles.
• Don’t leave your wallet or purse or high value items (cellphones, electronic tablets, laptops, cash or jewelry) visible in your vehicle. Put them in the trunk, a locked glove compartment, or take them with you.
• Use outside lighting. Most burglars will avoid vehicles around a brightly lit home.
• Don’t leave your vehicle running unattended or with the keys in the ignition.
