Girls basketball: Florida team pulls away from Vaqueros

Robert Perea, The Fernley Reporter

A good run early in the second half had the Fernley High School girls basketball team in striking distance in their game Thursday against Ft. Pierce (Fla.) Central in the Green Valley Gator Winter Classic.

But some adjustments by Central allowed the Cobras to pull away late for a 57-36 win.

The Vaqueros are now 5-4 overall after losing their first two games in the tournament, and they play San Pedro (Calif.) Rolling Hills Prep at 9:15 a.m. Friday, a team Rogers said is much like Ft. Pierce.

We again jumped out early and held a seven point lead,” coach John Rogers said. “Fort Pierce was really skilled off the dribble and their kick outs to their 3 point shooters hurt us the entire night.”

Central built an 11-point halftime lead, which Fernley cut to five early in the third quarter.

“But they adjusted well and got the lead back to double digits by the end of the third,” Rogers said. “They then went to a delay of game style offense the entire fourth quarter and we had to take chances and they got a bunch of easy layups and we were forced to foul. Again happy with effort and we shot a little better today, but consistency and stability is a problem for us.”
