The Fernley High School boys basketball team heads east this weekend to open Northern 3A East League play, with a game at 6 p.m. Friday at Spring Creek and a Saturday rematch of last year’s Northern 3A Region championship game at Elko at 2:30 p.m.

The Vaqueros will enter league play with an 11-4 overall record, including a 5-0 sweep in crossover games, with one crossover against North Valleys still to be played on Jan. 20. Last week the Vaqueros reached the championship game of the Rail City Classic in Sparks, before losing the title game to Damonte Ranch.

They started the tournament on Tuesday by routing Hug 68-37. Jett Caudle led the way for the Vaqueros with 21 points, 5 assists and 7 steals, while Johnnie Williams added 16 points.

In the championship game, Damonte Ranch took a 70-51 win over the Vaqueros. Sheldon Jacobson and Caudle each had 11 for the Vaqueros.

This past Monday, the Vaqueros lost a nonleague game at Reno, 54-45. They got off to a hot start, leading 18-8, but Reno turned the tide with a 19-4 second quarter. No Fernley stats were available from that game.
