Fresh off four wins in the McQueen Varsity Elite Tournament last week, the Fernley High School girls basketball team hits the road this weekend for the opening of 3A East League play with a 14-game winning streak.

The Vaqueros will try to keep their streak going as they visit Spring Creek Friday at 6 p.m. and Elko Saturday at 1 p.m.

Last week, the Vaqueros beat three Northern 5A teams, plus a visiting California team. On Tuesday, they beat Galena 58-40 behind a balanced attack. Jaelece Wasson and Tia Otuafi each scored 12 points, while Jasmyne Torres and Taylor Tollestrup each scored 10.

Later that day, they beat Reno, 48-47, as Torres led the way with 16 points and Tollestrup added 11. Fernley trailed 40-32 entering the fourth quarter after being down by as much as 14 points, but outscored the Huskies 16-7 in the fourth quarter to pull out the win.

“The girls buckled down and fought back,” coach Ralph Dunn said. “This game should help us from here on out.”

Wednesday they rolled past McQueen 54-34. Torres and Nadia Velazquez put in 10 points each, while Otuafi and Haley Jensen scored eight each.

They finished the tournament Thursday with a 41-19 win over Loyalton (Calif). Torres led the way with 12 points.

“Glad we’re done with the preseason games,” coach Ralph Dunn said. “Now we can buckle down and get ready and prepare for the league games.”
