Fresh off a split of two games in Spring Creek and Elko last weekend, the Fernley High School boys basketball team looks to solidify its playoff position with a pair of key games this weekend, against Fallon at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Lowry at 2:30 p.m. Saturday.

The Vaqueros are in the middle of a jumble in the East Division of the Northern 3A with a 4-3 league record, a half game behind second-place Lowry and a half game ahead of fourth-place Fallon.

The Vaqueros experienced both ends of the league spectrum last weekend, beating last-place Spring Creek 76-58 Friday night, but losing to first-place Elko Saturday afternoon.

In Spring Creek, the Vaqueros got their offense in high gear in the second and third quarters to blow the game open. With a 14-9 lead, they exploded for 27 points in the second quarter to stretch their halftime advantage to 41-24. Then they outscored the Spartans 24-16 in the third quarter to go up 65-40.

Four Fernley players hit double figures in scoring, led by Ryan Gamsby with 18 points, Josh Cartagena added 17, Carson Kingston scored 14 and Jett Caudle added 13.

Saturday against the top team in the league, the Vaqueros were much more competitive than in the first meeting between the team. They trailed only 16-9 after a quarter and 29-15 at the half, until Elko exploded from the break with a 28-6 third quarter.

Kingston scored 13 to lead the Vaqueros, while Garrett Harjo added seven.
