Fernley girls win Yerington Relays, boys second

With the announcement the day before that the spring sports season was being suspended as a precaution because of the coronavirus COVID-19 outbreak, the Fernley High School track teams went to the March 14 Yerington Relays unsure if it would be their last met of the season.

If it was, they made it count.

The Vaqueros’ girls team won the meet with 132,5 points, 33 points ahead of second-place Fallon, with 99.5 points. Lowry was third with 87.

The boys team placed second with 121.5 points, five points behind Incline. Yerington was third with 106 points.

“The kids did great,” coach Todd Wright said. “I talked to the kids before the meet and explained that all we know is we have for sure is this meet today. We can’t worry about any of these other things, we just need to treat this meet as the most important meet of the year.”

“I feel really sad for our seniors, all of whom performed very well,” Wright added.

Seniors Nicholas Bernardo and Samantha Manning each had a day to remember.

Bernardo won the 110-meter hurdles with a school record time of 15.37 and set another school record in the 300 hurdles with a time of 45.83.

He also ran a leg of the 4×400 relay, which Fernley won by nearly 10 seconds, with a time of 3:48.41. He was joined by Dustin Boutell, Carson Humes and Jonah Turner.

Manning won the 800 meters with a school record of 2:35.42, and she teamed with Celeste Condie to lead two relay teams to first place finishes,

“Sam ran one of the best races I’ve ever seen in winning the 800,” Wright said.

In the 4×200, Camille Radli and Marissa Di Stefano joined Manning and Condie in posting a time of 1:59.02, and in the 4×400 it was Di Stefano and Liliana Rodarte running with Manning and Condie, as they won with a time of 4:35.24

Among the other seniors, Wright said Aspen Kenison threw well in the shot put and discus, and Emma Parsons took fourth in the triple jump and fifth in the long jump.
